CommunityAmerica Sets Record for Junior Achievement Fundraiser
CEO faces bull ride and will be either 'more sore or more poor' as a result
Lenexa, KS ( 05/17/2007) -- CommunityAmerica Credit Union volunteers and friends raised more than $37,000 for Junior Achievement during their annual Bowl-A-Thon, more than any other company has raised in the bowl-a-thon's 23 years, the credit union announced.
"We're thrilled that our staff and members have gotten behind this fundraiser, which teaches youth about how business works and thus contributes to their financial literacy," said Dennis Pierce, CommunityAmerica's CEO. "Students who understand business and financial matters will be better managers of their own money when they grow up."
Matt Dillane, president and executive director of Junior Achievement, praised the credit union for its efforts.
"Credit unions, as membership organizations, care about the community," Dillane said. "The entire community and nation benefit when everyone understands how money, business and the economy work, and this record-setting gift helps Junior Achievement convey that understanding to students."
Since the credit union exceeded its $30,000 fundraising goal, Pierce will make good on his pledge to ride a mechanical bull at the CommunityAmerica annual meeting on June 14 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. The longer Pierce stays on the bull, the less his contribution needs to be.
"I understand Matt Dillane will have some control over the mechanical bull, and he no doubt will try to get me tossed pretty quickly," Pierce said. "I'll either be more sore or more poor. Either way, it's for a good cause."
Extraordinary commitment from credit union executives, staff, business partners and members made the record-setting contribution possible.
In April, executives of the credit union camped out in the Lenexa office park where corporate headquarters are, toasting S'mores for staff to encourage them to form teams and support the Bowl-A-Thon. Dillane cooked dinner for the executives.
The next day, after their night out, executives conducted a Junior Achievement lesson for fourth graders from Lenexa's Sunflower Elementary School in a tent. They then served the students and headquarters staff a campout lunch.
CommunityAmerica's fun- and fund-raising initiative concludes with Pierce's mechanical bull ride at the annual meeting in June.
